Paris’ women enter the modern age

PantalonsAccording to an article that I just read in Le Figaro. The 17th of November 1800 a law was put in place that made wearing of pants illegal for a women in Paris. Exceptions where made for riding a bicycle or horse. In any other case you hade to request an exception from the prefecture.

Happy 2Well, so what? That was the way things where at that time, right? Well, the story didn’t end there. This law was never repealed…until now. Actually, until last Thursday it was officially forbidden for any woman in Paris to wear pants.

The article didn’t say which year the last offender was fined. I guess it wasn’t anytime recently.
