Another two weeks gone by.

Another two weeks has gone by. I’ve spent both weekends with the kids at my place although we did not do anything special this time. Jonathan and I continued our semi-binge watching of 007 and watched through another two movies each weekend. Actually, as I am writing this on a sunny (for once) Sunday morning we still have one movie to watch this weekend. Cassandra has submerged herself in one of the Christmas present games, Monster Hunter World. She actually went out of bed around 4:30 this morning to start to play!

Next weekend is the start of the school Winter holidays so the kids will be at my place some more during the week after that. The plan is for two of them (Jonathan do not start his holiday until a week later) to come next Sunday and stay a few days beginning of the week. Then all of them will come for some days the week after. I will plan some time off from work that week.

As we did not do anything particular these two weekend, which the kids are generally quite happy with since it gives them more game and movie time, I haven’t take any photos so the featured image of this post is a photo of my new sub-woofer. I had ordered it quite a while ago and it got delivered just before last weekend. It was the last weak link in my home cinema setup.

Of old my old stuff my old sub-woofer was probably the one thing I was actually quite unhappy with. It was musically quite correct but as soon as it was forced to go down below 35 Hz, which would be quite often given the kind of movies that I watch, it started to rumble and distort the sound. This one is a quite affordable mid-range model which, with a 800W RMS Sledge amplifier and a 12 inch driver, packs quite a punch and delivers down to 16 Hz without breaking a sweat. I guess some might consider it butt ugly in the living room of course but hey, not me, I am a home cinema geek after all.

My only problem now is that I have to be careful not to give the neighbors “the shakes”.

Calm and relaxing weekend.

The weekend that just passed was a calm and relaxing weekend indeed. Especially compared to the one before that with the Fete de l’Oiseau and all that. The kids only stayed for the Saturday this weekend and I had not really planned anything in particular to do.

Jonathan asked if we could drive to Balexert to have a wee look around at Fnac so we did just that. Actually we ended up having a wee look around at MediaMarkt as well on our way back. He is pondering whether to go for a new Desktop rig (which he really doesn’t need) that he assembles himself with custom parts or a new lightweight laptop (which he actually do need). Guess which one he decided to go for in the end 🙂 .

three beef tacos with cheese, lettuce and tomatoesI had promised the kids to make Taco’s now when I finally got my dining table so we did not have to sit cramped up at the low table in front of the TV so that is what they got. I tried out the new basket shaped Taco shells from Old El Paso. The one’s that has Danny Trejo (Machete) in their commercials. Nothing to write home about I am afraid. They were made from wheat instead of corn and were kind of semi soft. I am really annoyed that you really cannot get the hard corn variety of ordinary Taco shells in France anymore. I guess too many people put convenience ahead of taste 😦 .

Clematis JackmaniiWell, enough of that. Since, as I wrote, the kids were home only for the Saturday I took the opportunity to go to Botanic on the Sunday to get more stuff for the balcony. I picked up some herbs (Rosemary, Thyme, Basil and Piment de Cayenne) and a flower pot for the herbs. I also picked up a Clematis Jackmanii to put in a pot that I had already bought the last time I was at Botanic. I hope to get it to cling to the balcony railing and go all the way to the other side.

It was a nice sunny weekend so it was perfect for some “gardening”. The forecast for the next 14 days appears to be great as well. Sunny and temperatures in the 28 to 32 degrees range. Okay a few of those days are “confiance 2” meaning pretty uncertain but … fingers crossed.

Lots of thing happening this weekend.

Wow, there has been a lot of things going on this weekend. Not only was it a long weekend due to the Monday being a holiday. It was also the weekend of Fete de I’0iseau in St Genis. On top of this I also, finally, got the furniture, that I ordered four months ago, delivered last Thursday and Saturday.

My new dining tableThe furniture delivery was a bit of a frustration to say the least. About two weeks ago I went to the furniture shop to ask where my stuff was. They had said there was to be a three months wait before delivery but it was already three months and two weeks by then. They told me that they had already received the sofa and was waiting for the dining table and the chairs and those should arrive within two weeks. Great I thought. So I was quite happy when they called Monday last week to say that they where going to deliver on Thursday.

My new sofaHowever when the delivery guy came he had a dining table and the chairs but no sofa. What the fuck? What is more the guy told me that he came from the company that made the table and knew nothing about any sofa! Why the fuck did the make me wait for the table before they delivered the sofa if it was not going to be the same guy doing the delivery anyway? So on the phone to ask what was going on. To make a long story short it turned out that some lazy pencil pusher could not be bothered to do his bloody job properly and had just pushed the button to deliver the table and chairs when they arrived without bothering to actually look at the original order. That is what you get in a system where you cannot fire people that are lazy or incompetent.

Well I finally got my sofa at least. After asking what the fuck the were doing they promised to deliver the sofa on the Saturday which they did. Something the kids promptly took advantage of.

My new sofa

Well, once that mess was over and done with me and the kids enjoyed the weekend and the Fete de I’0iseau. As usual we went down to the attractions in the afternoon when they opened. This weekend was a bit special though since I now live in St Genis. As a matter of fact I can see the highest of the attractions from my balcony. I pretty much lives next to the fairground.

Fete de l'Oiseaux 2017 By nightSo we had planned to go down in the evening as well when it was dark and all the lights were on. Unfortunately it just had to star to to rain, heavily, in the evening. We had pretty much given up when the rain almost stopped. By then Cassandra and Timothy were already in bed but me and Jonathan did a quick tour. Due to the rain it was, sadly, rather empty on the fairground but Jonathan went for a ride on one of the attractions anyway just to have done something in the evening.

The "Carnival" at Fete de l'OiseauThe next day was the day of the carnival so we went down to have a look at that and then we went for another tour at the fairground. That took most of the afternoon. Once back in the apartment we sat down watching TV for a while. The kids did not want to ride in the car to Bellegarde right away since they were afraid to get carsick after the attractions

So that was a pretty full weekend. The Monday I started with a sleep in. Okay, I only slept to about 8:30 but still… Then I went to Botanic to start to get some pots, soil and stuff for my balcony. I want some flowers there but most of all I want some herbs so can have my own fresh herbs for my cooking.  Speaking of cooking, I made a really simple to make dish for Sunday lunch. Chicken filet with fries, tomatoes and a cream sauce with fresh basil. Simple but it was so good with the basil sauce.

The rest of the Monday I spent in Geneva with my girlfriend.

Well, now it is almost midnight and it is back to work tomorrow so I guess I have to add photos and post this tomorrow.

I uploaded a few more photos to Flickr in my Fete de l’Oiseau 2017 and my St Genis Pouilly alums by the way.

Tried using the grill in my apartment for the first time.

I guess this weekend can be summarized with cooking and movie/TV watching as can most of the weekends lately. Well, that is perhaps not exactly true but there was a lot of movie/TV watching and some cooking.

The kids have stayed the entire weekend. I will drive them to Bellegarde in a couple of hours. Jonathan needed new shoes so we started off going to Balexert. At least me and Jonathan went to Balexert. The two small ones did not want to go so they stayed in the apartment. Apart from the shoes we picked up Moana on Blu-ray at FNAC which we watched while having lunch today. It was quite good although the two small ones insisted that we watched it in French. Not even telling them that it was “The Rock” doing the English voice for Maui managed to convince them. Grumble…

At Coq Rouge for dinner

I made some nice minced meat steaks for lunch on Saturday. Classical Swedish style with potatoes, salad and green pepper cream sauce. Timothy complained about getting plain boiled potatoes of course. If it is not fried it is no good for him.

However, in the evening I had booked a table at Coq Rouge here in the village. They changed owners about two years ago and the new owners are trying to keep it a bit more posh than the previous ones. The food was quite good. I would not say they merit any Guide Michelin stars but quite good nonetheless. Of course Timothy was complaining that all the dishes had something in them that he did not like. Sigh. He always finds something negative to complain about these times.

Lamb skewers ready for the grill
Lamb skewers ready for the grill

For lunch today I tried to use the grill in my oven for the first time. Grilled lamb skewers with Mediterranean rice, pickled olives, pickled garlic and a set of BBQ sauces. There was about 1.2 Kg of meat on those skewers and it went down almost all of it.

Oh, I made a small English breakfast (featured image of this post) with sausages, scrambled eggs and a few other things this morning as well. English style breakfast is usually a bit of a hit with the kids. The only drawback is that I have to get up early to prepare. Okay, maybe not that early but a hell of a lot earlier than if I would have just served corn flakes and sandwiches.

Finally got some curtains up

Got some curtains up in the apartment
Green curtains for Timothy…of course.

Yesterday the kids were at my place as usual on a Saturday. A lot of TV and Playstation was on the program of course. I had just received Doctor Strange on Blu-ray so we sat down and watched that one. Quite a good movie actually. A review will come up on my Books & Movies site shortly (translation: when I get around to it).

Anyway, this weekend they only stayed the Saturday so this morning I went about to get the curtains up that I bought. Actually I bought some of them yesterday when I had to go to Val Thoiry to get my new bracelet for my watch anyway and some of them I bought quite some time ago.

Got some curtains up in the apartmentSo I got curtains up in my bedroom, Cassandra’s bedroom, Timothy’s bedroom and the living room. I still have to find some cool curtains for Jonathan’s room. It makes quite a bit of difference. I will need to take them down again to iron them but that is for a rainy day :-).

The rooms feel much more comfortable and cozy now with the curtains up covering the naked window frames. Now if only my sofa, dining table and chairs that I have ordered would finally be delivered things are starting to feel that they are coming together at last. Well there are still a bunch of art that need to go up on the walls as well of course.

Finally started to get some art on the walls.

Last week it was my ex’s turn to have the kids, including the weekend and in addition this week I have not been in Geneva after work at all since my girlie friend have been in Sweden. So I have had some more time to do things for myself. I have to confess that I spent quite a bit of that time relaxing, watching TV and reading books.

Fortunately I did get around to do some less time-wasting things as well. One of those things was starting to put up some of my art on the walls. I have a lot more to put up but at least there is now a little bit of color in the entrance and the living room. I really hope that I will get my new dining table and my sofa soon. That will make the living room a lot more cozy. Unfortunately I think I have to wait at least another month.

Nice sized steaks and burgersOn another subject, I sampled a new restaurant last week while in Geneva. The Swiss Grill. Simple but quite enjoyable and good quality meat. If you are not into meat I suggest you stay well away from it. I just had to snap a photo (to the right) of the menu which was hand written on a big blackboard. I know some American’s probably wonder why the fuss but here in Europe a 700 gram chunk of meat is absolutely huge.

Speaking of photos, I created a new album, Miscellaneous 2017, on Flickr for everyday photos that do not really fit in any of the regular albums. Quite a few of these photos have been taken with my phone though so the quality ranges from okay to abysmal.

Furniture shopping

Yesterday I went for a spending spree and did some furniture shopping. I was planning to get a dining table and chairs but I ended up getting both that and a sofa to put in front of the TV in the living room. Both of them were actually planned purchases but I did not expect to buy both at the same time. Since they had one of the models that I was considering on display and the delivery time is about three months I decided to buy both at the same time though. Otherwise I would probably not get my sofa until the second half of the year.

table-ramsesThe colors are of course not going to be the ones on the pictures since I stole those from their web site. The table and chairs are going to be beech colored with a slightly reddish darker brown ceramic insert and bordeaux red upholstery. The sofa is going to be leather also in a bordeaux like red color instead of the gray textile in the image.

The latter was available with all kinds of electronic comfort utilities but I did not really feel I would be using that very much so I went for a traditional fixed one.

Now I have to wait almost three months for it to be delivered…sigh. Well at least I managed to negotiate a 3000 € discount.
